NTPC distributes electricity to end-use consumers in 26 of the 33 communities in the NWT and supplies electricity on a wholesale basis to two distributing utilities which, in turn, retail electricity to customers in Yellowknife and the Hay River area. NTPC's facilities include hydroelectric, diesel, and LNG (liquefied natural gas) generation plants, transmission systems and numerous isolated electrical distribution systems. NTPC also owns and operates alternative energy assets used for the supply of residual heat, solar power and co-generation.

The Corporation’s systems serve a population of approximately 43,000 in an area of 1.3 million square kilometers. Many of the communities NTPC serves are only accessible by air, barge or winter road.


Job Description

Under the direction of the Chief Technical Officer, Asset Management & Engineering, the Asset Manager, Thermal  is responsible for managing all thermal assets of NTPC’s Thermal Zone generation and auxiliary systems, LNG storage and handling, residual heating and other systems. It also supports solar, wind and other renewable generation technologies as required. Scope includes all communities, buildings, plants and facilities in NTPC’s Thermal Zone.  This position acts as Asset Management’s conduit to facilitate best business practices in coordination and cooperation with Thermal Operations, T&D and IT (SCADA & Automation Operations).

                                                                                                                                                                    

Responsibilities:

  • Manages the Corporation's assets for the Thermal Division’s generating stations by identifying, inventorying and monitoring each asset system and performance.

  • Conducts asset condition and risk assessments (ACRA) to establish the Asset Health Index (AHI) used to develop the Corporation’s Power Systems Plan.

  • In consultation with other NTPC Divisions and departments, develops a corporate asset inventory and subsequently updates this inventory on an annual basis.

  • Prepares preliminary designs strategies for upgrades and new assets to the extent necessary to develop Project Briefs including high-level project budgets. 

  • Develops the Corporate Capital Plans for the Thermal Division including the annual capital budget, the five year capital plan and the 25 year capital plan by identifying and prioritizing capital work items for consideration utilizing the Power Systems Plan. 

  • Provides overall direction to the maintenance strategies of the Thermal Division with the Cooperation’s CMMS with new and existing assets.

  • Provides technical support services to Operations for management of the assets.

  • Assists in establishing Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), for Engineering, Operations and Maintenance utilizing the CMMS to ensure that NTPC’s asset management strategy meets the corporation’s Mission, Vision and Strategy.

  • Establishes and maintains internal communication networks with respect to asset management.

  • Cultivates and maintains effective external relationships with electric utility companies and Territorial Government Departments to provide information on NTPC’s Thermal asset management system for new upcoming assets and the procedure of managing the existing assets.

  • Attends and/or makes appearances or presentations before the Corporation Board of Directors, and/or other Boards or Agencies as required.

  • Supervision of one direct report.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil, Electrical or Mechanical Engineering.

  • 5 – 7 years of related engineering experience.

  • Professional Engineer eligible for registration with NAPEG in a relevant discipline.

  • Experience in Asset Management in a utility setting with Thermal and/or Hydro Generation.

  • Experience with design, construction, and maintenance of assets situated in a northern environment. Thermal and hydroelectric experienced is preferred.

  • Accomplished computer skills (MS Office Suite, MS Project, Outlook, etc.) and ability to apply relevant design software.

  • Solid understanding of Computerized Maintenance Systems

  • Excellent communication and writing skills.

  • Above average interpersonal skills and ability to work in a team environment.

  • Valid Class 5 driver’s license.

 

The salary range for this position is $120,845 to $151,319 plus location, and accommodation allowances of approximately $7,773 per annum.  We offer a comprehensive benefits package, which includes Health and Dental Benefits, Long-term Disability, Life Insurance, paid Sick Days and a Defined Pension Plan.
