Job Description

The Distribution Engineer is responsible for the design and implementation of high quality engineering plans, standards and practices to ensure the safe and efficient construction, operation and maintenance of Saint John Energy’s Substations and Distribution system.

Critical Tasks:

  • Project Management, includes developing project charters, financial tracking, scheduling, Risk management, construction management and implementation for projects that vary in scale
  • Monitor the electrical system performance and carry out system protection & planning studies accordingly
  • Prepare equipment specifications and contract documents
  • Review and Approval of vendors acceptance drawing & designs, including witness testing and design reviews
  • Develop and maintains Engineering and Construction Standards
  • Assign and coordinates third-party contracts

 

Duties:

  • Supports the Vision, Mission and Guiding Principles of Saint John Energy.
  • Designs, estimates and co-ordinates the construction or modification of distribution lines, substations and street lighting projects;
  • Responds to customer complaints, inquiries, etc.
  • Reviews and recommends tenders for approved construction and engineering projects; and prepares, evaluates and recommends major contracts;
  • Assists with the preparation of area and substation load forecasts and facility planning;
  • Carries out system protection studies and the implementation of protection plans;
  • Develops and maintains Engineering and Construction Standards;
  • Prepares equipment specifications and contract documents;
  • Determines adequacy of equipment for use on Saint John Energy’s system;
  • Advises on the proper application of Saint John Energy policy with respect to customer equipment and construction;
  • Maintains up-to-date knowledge and resolutions of Industry Equipment Issues.
  • Preparation of the monthly Substation loading report Monitors the electrical system performance, prepares load growth projections, and provides reports and recommendations. 
  • Provides technical assistance in the area of system operations;
  • Provides assistance to engineering, operations, customer service, and all other staff positions as required;
  • Assists in the restoration of power;
  • Prepares budgetary figures for planned projects;
  • Aids with continuing development of Saint John Energy’s SCADA system;
  • Co-ordinates the procurement of materials and services required for all projects;
  • Co-ordinates construction projects with internal work force as well as outside Contractors
  • Develops and maintains operating system records;
  • Supports the development of the Capital, O&M and Long Term plan.
  • Various other temporary and/or permanent duties as required in the operations of Saint John Energy and as directed by Management.

 

Working Conditions:

  • 40 Hours per week (Flextime optional with approval)
  • Inside office and outside environment
  • Exposure to construction sites
  • Sitting and standing for moderate periods
  • Ability to conduct presentations to upper management, as well as the entire organization
  • Ability to physically implement designs
  • travel required
  • Rotating system on call after hours.
  • Overtime/weekend & evening work as required 

 

Employment Requirements:

  • Must have a recognized degree in Electrical Engineering and be eligible to become a member of APEGNB
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Must have good verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to interact effectively with peers and Management
  • Knowledge of Canadian electrical codes and engineering standards
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite of tools  and Auto Cad
  • Possess a high level of business decorum and confidentiality
  • Excellent time management and project  management skills
  • Effective leadership skills and self-motivated
  • High level of multi-tasking, requiring accuracy and attention to details at all times
  • Preparation of budgets and ability to exercise necessary cost control measures
  • Ability to interpret and implement company policies and procedures
  • Possess a valid class 5 driver’s licence
